A Study on the Effectiveness of Case Management for Rehabilitation of the Chronic Mentally Illness


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the case management for rehabilitation of the chronic mentally disabled. This study used one group pretest-posttest design. The subject of this study was 82 chronic mentally disabled(day care program 36, Home care program 46) registered in the D Mental Health Center from January 1999 through December 2001.
The results of this study are as follows;
1. BPRS scores of client in day care program and home care program were more reduced 6 month after than that of before application the case management(t= 3.45, p= .001 ; t= 5.72, p= .000).
2. GAF scores of client in day care program and home care program were more increased 6 month after than that of before application the case management(x2 = 44.9, p= .000 ; x2 = 101.5, p= .000).
3. Admission numbers of client in day care program and home care program were more reduced 6 month after than that of before application the case management(x2 = 13.9, p= .008) ; x2 = 14.2, p= .007).
4. Occupational activities scores only client in day care program were more increased 6 month after than that of before application the case management(t=-10.46, p= .000).
5. Regarding usefulness of the day care program scores, clients found area of social readjustment training which is related to works most beneficial.
6. As a result of analyzing client's narrative content, revealed 6 themes about hope strategies for rehabilitation as follows.
1) Low self-esteem
2) Building supportive, trust relationship with therapist-client
3) Self confidence to be expected better than now condition or facilitating success
4) Ability with self control
5) Reconstructuring a sense of self
6) Finding meaning in their daily life
In Summary, case management are beneficial to chronic mentally disabled for their treatment and rehabilitation. Also, It is essential for supportive caring behavior of therapist to enhanced cilent's hope strategies for their rehabilitation, in that they must help the chronic mentally disabled suffering even more than 10 year clinical history readjustment back to society.
